I don’t have a degree in writing. Not from a traditional institution of higher education at least. The closest thing to formal training I have is a seminar on creative writing while in college. Everything else I learned from reading, writing, and podcasts. And today we’re going to focus on the latter.

Enter Podcast University.

I’ve spent hours and hours and hours attending Podcast University. I’ve heard lectures on any aspect of the craft that I choose: characterization, ideation, world building, creating languages, dialogue, submissions, publishing, working with agents.

My truck is my classroom. It started three years ago when I got a new truck and the speakers were terrible. I couldn’t listen to music, so I really dove into podcasts. Now, on the way to work, I listen to a podcast about writing. On the way home, I listen to a podcast about writing. Road trips: writing podcasts.

I encourage you to put in the hours and hours to learn about the craft. Find some podcasts that you enjoy and buckle in. You’ll learn so much. And the best part of it all? Podcast University has free tuition!

Here are some of my favorite podcasts to get you started. Most of them have a pretty extensive backlog, so you can probably find an episode on just about any topic.
