November 2022 Top Ten
1.
We watched Enola Holmes 2 and really enjoyed it.
2.
I read Blue Horses, a book of poetry by Mary Oliver. She’s so great. Her poetry is so effortless and stillness-inducing. This line stuck with me:
“I would like people to remember of me, how inexhaustible was her mindfulness.”
- from the poem “A Little Ado About This And That”
3.
This album came out awhile, but the song Time Is a One Way Mirror has been on repeat lately as I’ve been trying to understand what it means.
4.
I also re-read Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman for book club. It’s so great. We had a good discussion about it. Highly recommend. You won’t watch the news the same.
5.
I read Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. Nothing life-changing for me, but i enjoyed it.
6.
Sometimes I send my friends random videos of strangers singing happy birthday to someone they know who has the same name as my friend, because it’s really funny. Here’s an example.
After I sent one, I looked at the guy’s channel and he has a cover of him singing Cat’s In The Cradle and I think I could be friends with this guy.
7.
I read Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle and really enjoyed it. It’s short and relevant and pulls no punches. The Introduction in my edition by a guy named Michael Foster was unnecessarily brash and macho, but the actual book is great. He’s a line that stuck with me:
“Leave nothing unsettled that is eternal.”
8.
We also watched the first episode of the new show All Creatures Great and Small. It’s like Downton Abbey, but with even lower stakes (if you can imagine!). I enjoyed it.
9.
We read the book The 6 Types of Working Genius by Patrick Lencioni for work, and it was really helpful. It explained some criticism I’ve received about my working habits over the last decade or so, and helped me see trends in my work. Definitely recommend for work teams.
10.
Watched this video of one week of a guy training an American Kestrel, which is awesome.
