May 2024 Top Ten

1.

We read Born Standing Up by Steve Martin for book club. It’s a fun, short read about his time as a stand up comedian. I think it’s a good read for artists who want to do art full-time, because it shows how non-linear the path to “success” is.

2.

I watched this video or a rare book collector reacting to a first edition of The Hobbit at the Antiques Roadshow.

3.

I read The Secrets of Story by Matt Bird. The title is hilarious, but I was surprised at how helpful it really was. Reading his follow up about character right now.

4.

Finally finished the Lent/Easter devotional called Bread and Wine by Plough Publishing House. It was great. Will probably be reading it again next year.

5.

Me and Sammi watched two comedy stand up specials: “The Salesman” by Greg Warren and “Cult Classic” by Joe Zimmerman. They’re both free on Youtube.

6.

The Avett Brothers released a new album. I haven’t listened to it a ton, but “Forever Now” is a great song.

7.

I read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and enjoyed it quite a bit. Found this book by looking for books to read to my toddler. Started it because the main character has the same name as him. Finished it because it was awesome.

Loved all the plays on words and turns of phrases. And the narration by Rainn Wilson was great. The end felt like a whimsical D&D campaign.

8.

I watched this video about the six forces quietly shaping you right now.

9.

I read How to Know a Person by David Brooks and found it super helpful. Would be a good read for people in ministry.

“Morality is mostly about the small, daily acts of building connection.”

10.

This video of two GPTs (AI) interacting is fascinating and unsettling.
