August 2024 Top Ten

1.

We read The Underwater Welder by Jeff Lemire, a graphic novel about reckoning with the past. It made me a better father.

2.

I watched this video of a guy who made a short film with a $9 Amazon camera. I love these kind of creative videos where people implement restrictions on their creativity.

3.

I also read the graphic novel Daredevil: Born Again. It’s pretty violent and dark, but from a story perspective, really solid.

4.

Sammi and I watched all three of the X-Men movies from the original trilogy from the early 2000s. I love that first one. And Magneto is a pretty compelling character to me.

5.

My favorite musician John Van Deusen released a new single and announced a new upcoming album.

6.

I finished The Way of the Pilgrim and enjoyed it.

7.

I reread How to Grow Old by Cicero. It’s a good one to read often.

8.

I read Deeper by Dane Ortlund and thought it was great. This line stayed with me: “Slow change is still real change.”

9.

I finally finished The Divine Comedy: Purgatory. Getting ready to wrap it up in Paradise. What a ride.

10.

I’ve been following this Youtuber who is taking AI images as a reference, but painting an original piece in a classical oil painting style.
